As many of you may know, I am no longer a New Yorker, so please check out my new blog A Library of My Own. If you are just reading Life and Times, you are missing out. Thanks!

Birds of a Feather

It's not unusual to see rats in the subway. Usually they are on the tracks. A few are even kind of cute...more mouse-ish looking. I've even seen one bird flying around in one stop. I'm not sure how it got down there. But this morning, my husband saw this:
Yeah that's right. He said a guy came in with it and let it down and it started walking around.

Now I've never seen a parrot on the subway. A couple days ago I did see a man with a two foot single green feather sticking straight up from his hat and a purple suit. But a parrot? That's just weird.

Subway in Style

Often when I take my subway line (the A Line for the curious), I often think...hmmm, why don't they update these cars? I've seen other lines with brand new cars that actually list the stops along the line and other marvelous wonders. I mean, these cars just seem a bit outdated:
But then I came the realization. Ohhhh!! They are just waiting for this to come back in style and people will flock to ride the "retro" cars.

So now I'm just waiting....

14th Street Subway

Almost every subway stop in New York City has its charms. The 14th street stop always cracks me up. There are little statues depicting life underground or something like that. If you are waiting for a train here, wonder around and take a look:

I love their little faces:

This one cracks me up. The myth of alligators living in the subway:

This one is a little weird:

And I think the elephant's shoes are pretty funny:

The Pole's Like Gold

I have am starting to get my commute to work down pat. I only have to transfer once...the A to the E. The E is mad packed in the mornings. We all cram so much into the train cars that often there are masses of people left behind waiting for the next one to come. I have so far been left behind twice. It really gives me a new meaning to the phrase "when push comes to shove". So forget about a seat...those are long long gone. What you desire is the pole or the ceiling railings. Often we are crammed so much that you are left without anything to hold on to. I've held onto lights, ceilings (when I can reach it), and even had to balance for a few stops (I do not recommend this at all). And never never hold on to the air vent...you will get tons of black stuff on your hands.
